Lessons in Leadership, Innovation, and Industry Readiness: Mohammed’s Story
After spending four years in the pharmaceutical industry, I knew I wanted to expand my expertise beyond technical execution. I was seeking a master’s program that would not only deepen my technical knowledge but also open avenues of industry challenges, leadership development, and cutting-edge research. Purdue’s Chemical Engineering Professional MS program has provided access to a network of industry professionals, experienced faculty, and collaborative research opportunities, all of which have played a crucial role in expanding my knowledge, refining my problem-solving skills, and preparing me for future leadership roles in engineering.
Expanding Horizons Through Capstone and Co-Op Experience
One of the biggest highlights of my Purdue journey has been my capstone project. Through this opportunity, I have access to state-of-the-art Flex Lab equipment, industry-standard tools, and deep research-driven problem-solving, allowing me to troubleshoot complex engineering issues while receiving mentorship from industry leaders and supportive faculties.
Another defining aspect of my experience has been my co-op at Boehringer Ingelheim’s Fremont, CA location. The pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is highly regulated and fast-paced, requiring both technical expertise and strong problem-solving skills. My time at Purdue had already prepared me with a solid foundation in process optimization, regulatory compliance, and data-driven decision-making, which I was able to apply directly in my role.
Interdisciplinary Learning and Leadership Development
One of my reasons for pursuing a Master’s degree was to develop leadership and project management skills, which led me to take on the role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) at The Data Mine at Purdue. This role has been instrumental in shaping my ability to lead and coordinate between corporate partners and student teams. The experience of managing a project, setting goals, conducting weekly stand-up meetings, and ensuring alignment with industry objectives has strengthened my leadership capabilities.

An invaluable aspect of Purdue’s Chemical Engineering PMP program for me is the accessibility and support from faculty and mentors. From my first interaction during orientation to ongoing coursework, professors, and advisors have been incredibly approachable and invested in student success. Whether it’s discussing career opportunities, seeking guidance on research, or simply having conversations about industry trends, the mentorship at Purdue has been instrumental in my academic and professional growth.

For anyone considering Purdue’s Chemical Engineering PMP program, my advice is to engage actively with faculty, mentors, and industry professionals. Building a strong network is crucial—not just for securing co-ops and communication with capstone project mentors, but also for gaining insights into industry expectations.
Additionally, don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. Take courses that challenge you, explore interdisciplinary opportunities, and make the most of Purdue’s extensive resources. Attending career fairs, leveraging Purdue’s alumni network, and applying consistently for opportunities will greatly enhance your experience.
