Engineering a Cleaner Future: My Journey in Purdue’s PMP

Dominic Calabrese

Joining Purdue’s Professional Master’s Program (PMP) in Chemical Engineering marked a pivotal step in my career, allowing me to align my chemistry background with my passion for engineering. After completing my undergraduate degree in chemistry, I realized I wanted to work in a field where I could make tangible contributions—especially in alternative energy and cleaner fuels. Purdue’s PMP, with its concentration in Kinetics, Catalysis, and Reaction Engineering, offered the perfect path to blend these interests meaningfully.

One of the most valuable aspects of Purdue’s PMP is how it bridges theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. Each class, particularly in advanced mathematics and management, builds a strong analytical mindset essential for problem-solving in engineering. The coursework is designed to prepare us for complex challenges, giving us practical skills we’ll need in the energy field and beyond.

Building a Strong Network

Purdue’s community has been integral to my journey. Early connections with staff and faculty, such as Julayne Moser and my Engineering Leadership professor Scott Hutchinson, have already helped me expand my professional network. These relationships, combined with Purdue’s career resources—from resume reviews to professional networking events—reinforce that I’m part of a community invested in my growth and success.

With the knowledge I’m gaining here, I feel ready to make an impact in alternative energy. My goal is to contribute to creating cleaner, more efficient energy solutions, whether in automotive fuels or even nuclear energy. Purdue’s PMP in Chemical Engineering is providing the foundation I need to take on these challenges, and I’m excited about the future.

Advice for Future PMP Students

To anyone considering Purdue’s Chemical Engineering PMP Program, I’d say: be prepared for a challenge that’s absolutely worth it. Purdue provides unparalleled support and resources, making it possible to turn hard work into real progress. This journey is about growth, discovery, and preparing for a career with purpose.
