David J. Love, the Nick Trbovich Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2020 Purdue Engineering Faculty Excellence Award for Research. The award is for an exceptional research contribution presented/published within the last five years by a Purdue Engineering faculty member that has been significantly recognized by experts in the field.

As Purdue faculty, staff, and students adjust to remote working, teaching, and learning, ECE alumnus Christopher Svec led a virtual talk to give tips and advice based on his experience. More than 100 students participated in the virtual talk, which took place via Zoom. Svec (BSEE ’99, MSECE ’02) is currently a software engineering manager at iRobot and leads the embedded software team for the Roomba vacuuming and mopping robots. He has been with iRobot for 6 years, and has worked remotely for the last five.

The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Thursday (April 2) approved the naming of Purdue’s new STEM Teaching Lab facility as the Chaney-Hale Hall of Science. The naming recognizes the joint leadership gifts from Jeannie (Bachelor of Science 1961, Pharmacy) and Jim Chaney, and Judy (BS ’61, Pharmacy) and Dave Hale (BS ’59, Electrical Engineering).

Virtual reality headsets and application programs for VR are not gaining traction with users because of a chicken-and-egg dilemma, lack of VR content and slow market penetration of custom-made VR units. Purdue University researchers have created a new approach to VR that allows multiple players to interact with the same VR game on smartphones and provides new opportunities for enterprise, education, health care and entertainment applications.

Purdue’s electrical engineering graduate program moved up three spots – from 12 to 9 – in the U.S. News & World Report 2021 Best Graduate Schools rankings. Computer engineering held steady at 12 in the new rankings, which were released on March 17th. Purdue’s College of Engineering ranked 7th nationally among doctoral-granting universities, up from 8th last year.

Two Purdue researchers have been selected as Quantum Information Science and Engineering Network (QISE-NET) Triplet Awardees. The “triplets” – a combination of a university principal investigator, an industrial or national laboratory mentor, and a graduate student – come from a variety of disciplines relevant to advancing the development of quantum technologies such as materials science, chemistry, device engineering, physics, computer science and industrial research.

A Purdue ECE and CS team comprising faculty members Saurabh Bagchi and He Wang, working with AT&T Labs Research, has won the best paper award at the recently concluded 17th ACM International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) at Lyon, France. The paper shows how to perform efficient mobile crowdsensing using smartphones and reports on a study done on Purdue campus with 50 Purdue students collaboratively creating a barometric pressure map of the campus.

A team of Purdue ECE-affiliated researchers have won the Best Paper Award of the 2020 IEEE Power & Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI). The first author on the paper, entitled “Autonomous Power Dispatch for a Deep Space Vehicle Power System,” is ECE grad student Pallavi Madhav Kulkarni. Co-authors are Prof. Dionysios Aliprantis, and ECE alumni Benjamin Loop and Ning Wu.

Purdue University President Mitch Daniels announced Wednesday (March 11) the creation of the Purdue For Life foundation, an organization designed to deepen ties to alumni and to drive and coordinate all alumni-facing activities for the university.
