Most airplane wings use hydraulic motors to change their shape and control their flight. But associate professor Andres Arrieta is investigating a simpler kind of “morphing” wing, using bi-stable structures to switch a wing’s shape and stiffness with a minimum amount of energy.

Bluetooth horse slicker can monitor chronic disease

A first-of-its-kind horse slicker with a specially designed liner could be able to "tell" a horse's human caregivers of increasing chronic diseases. Chi Hwan Lee worked with Purdue University veterinarians to convert off-the-shelf horse slickers into e-textiles that continuously monitor equine cardiac, respiratory and muscular systems for several hours under ambulatory conditions.
