"Macro- and micro-modeling and simulation of squeeze casting process”

Abstract: Squeeze casting is an advanced manufacturing process for aluminum and magnesium alloys, which produces high integrity and heat-treatable cast components. The major physics involved in squeeze casting is pressurized solidification and it is important to understand the fundamentals of pressurized solidification and to develop numerical models both at macro- and micro-scales. This talk focuses on the challenges and latest progresses in modeling on squeeze casting of aluminum and magnesium alloys, including research dedicated to thermal-mechanical coupling simulation, casting-mold interfacial heat transfer model, pressurized solidification and microstructure modeling, through-process modeling, etc. The prospects of technological development and application of modeling and simulation on squeeze casting process are presented as well.

Biography: Dr. Zhiqiang Han is a faculty member of Tsinghua University. He was awarded Ph.D degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1997. After received his Ph.D degree, Dr. Han worked as postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Science and Technology Beijing and Tsinghua University. In 2002, he was appointed as Research Officer and had worked for three years at Swansea University. Dr. Han joined Tsinghua University in 2006 and holds the post of full professor in Materials Processing Engineering. Dr. Han’s research interest includes squeeze casting technology, lightweight materials and processing, and integrated computational materials engineering (ICME). In addition, Dr. Han is the author or co-author of more than 130 journal and conference papers. He is a member of the ICME committee of the TMS (Minerals, Metals and Materials Society), and also a member of the committee of SCNFA (Special Casting and Non-ferrous Alloys) of the CMES (Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society).
