Message From the Director
Thank you for your interest in the Office of Professional Practice (OPP). The OPP is the administrative epicenter for work-integrated learning activities that span 45 majors across eight of Purdue’s ten academic colleges. Since 1954, OPP has facilitated all Cooperative Education (Co-Op) programs available to students on the West Lafayette Campus. What started as a pilot program in the School of Mechanical Engineering has blossomed into a cross-campus partnership that engages nearly 1,000 students and 600 employers across the 3- and 5-session Co-Op models. While Cooperative Education remains our chief mandate, OPP operations have expanded to include the renowned GEARE (Global Engineering Alliance for Research and Education) program, Purdue’s premier international work experience program, as well as the Interns for Indiana program, a model that pairs Purdue undergraduates with Hoosier start-up and second-stage companies, with the goal of retaining Purdue-trained talent in Indiana after graduation.
The success of our programs is thanks in large part to the support we receive from our internal and external stakeholders. Purdue President Mitch Daniels has provided our Professional Practice Programs with a strong endorsement, stating that the Cooperative Education is one that is “ahead of its time…and likely to serve as a model for similar efforts in the future of higher education,” while also affirming his strong support for OPP’s global initiatives, which align with the Purdue Moves goal to increase immersive, semester-long experiences in diverse cultures. We are also grateful for the strong support we receive from our Professional Practice Partners, a group of industrial representatives, who provide guidance and financial support to OPP so that we may continually evaluate and innovate our programs to best serve today’s Boilermakers.
We are proud of the role we play in facilitating the professional practice and experiential education of Purdue’s students. If you have any questions or would like to explore opportunities to partner with OPP, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
