Locations and Programs

Choosing a Language of Study

Foreign language study is a requirement of the GEARE program. Students may choose to study any modern language offered at Purdue including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Students must complete 12 credit hours or demonstrate comparable proficiency (typically 202-level) prior to going abroad.

Things to consider when choosing a language:

  1. Previous Experience - Students may utilize AP credit or credit earned through Purdue language placement exams to meet the GEARE requirement.
  2. Availability of Study Abroad Destinations - GEARE students are strongly encouraged to perfect their language skills by choosing to study in a location where their GEARE language is spoken. The College of Engineering currently has approved study abroad programs in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish speaking countries. New programs are being developed, however, students choosing to study Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, or Russian may need to choose an English speaking country for study abroad.

Choosing a Study Abroad Destination

Students must consider several factors when considering a study abroad destination including language, availability of transferable courses, academic dates, location of international internship, and visas. Students may choose to study at any of the College of Engineering approved university partners. However, students are strongly recommended to study in locations coinciding with their language of study. Additionally, industrial internship opportunities are more easily acquired if done in the same country as study abroad. Availability of student internships and work authorization laws vary greatly making some destinations better suited for the GEARE program. The following guides will help you choose a destination based upon your language of study:

Available Locations by Language

Available Exchange Institutions

China

Taiwan

Language Requirements

GEARE students studying in China or Taiwan must complete 12 credits of Chinese prior to studying abroad.

Academic Dates

Typical spring semester dates in China and Taiwan are mid-February- mid-June. In Hong Kong, spring semester dates are February- the end of May. ME students studying at SJTU have the opportunity to participate in a program with an adapted January-May schedule. The typical semester dates in China and Taiwan do not allow for an internship meeting the minimal number of weeks to be completed prior to or after the semester. Students can work with their advisors to adjust their plans of study to accommodate international internship at a different time. They may also choose a research experience at their host institution. The research may be done concurrently with their semester of study abroad, however, they must complete 360 hours of research within a 6 month timeframe to meet the requirement.

Visa/Work Authorization

Visa and work authorization laws are frequently changing in both China and Taiwan. If choosing one of these destinations, please make sure to talk with the Office of Professional Practice about how the current laws will impact internship placement.
