E-mail: Setting Up Your E-Mail Program

Generic Instructions for most clients:

These generic settings apply to all e-mail clients for ECN mailboxes:

  1. Username and Password - Your ECN username and password. If you do not know your username or password, see Finding Your Password.
  2. Type of Incoming Server - ECN supports IMAP server types.
  3. Email Address - username@purdue.edu
  4. Incoming (IMAP) Server - This should be the same as the location of your home directory and will take the form servername.ecn.purdue.edu. If you do not know the name of your server, please see Finding Your Server Name.
  5. Root Folder/IMAP Namespace/IMAP Path Prefix: ~/mail
  6. Outgoing (SMTP) Server - This should be set to smtp.purdue.edu
  7. Security Settings - ECN requires you to configure some security settings.
    • Incoming Server: SSL must be enabled. IMAP should use port 993.
    • Outgoing Server: SSL must be enabled. SMTP should use port 587.
      • (Note: Some mail applications require TLS to be enabled rather than SSL. Try SSL first and if that doesn't work, go back and select TLS instead)
    • Outgoing Server: Requires authentication using your ECN login and password.
