Purdue University's dedication to large-scale, impactful, interdisciplinary research and learning in semiconductors plays a significant role, as the U.S. semiconductor/microelectronics industry is facing an overwhelming demand for trained talent, with industry forecasts projecting a need for at least 50,000 additional trained semiconductor engineers and scientists by 2030.
To address this growing industry need, Purdue University offers students in all undergraduate majors an opportunity to attain a certificate in Semiconductors and Microelectronics, providing them with a solid foundation in these critical areas and complementing their baccalaureate studies in fields ranging from engineering and computer science to physics, chemistry, technology, and business.
Moreover, Purdue University and the Office of Professional Practice have established significant global connections with several companies in the field of semiconductor/microelectronics, such as their dedicated partnership with ASML. Through opportunities provided by the Semiconductors in Belgium Study Abroad and Silicon Valley Study Away programs, numerous Purdue students, along with several OPP representatives, were able to visit ASML facilities at their headquarters in Veldhoven, Netherlands and in San Jose, California - all within a 24-hour timeframe.
ASML, a leader in innovation within the global semiconductor industry, provides machines for chipmakers to mass-produce microchips. Through top-notch internships and hands-on learning experiences facilitated by ASML, Purdue University students gain invaluable industry insights and practical skills.
Sophie Tung, Purdue University Semiconductor co-op program manager, emphasizes the significance of the ASML partnership, which opens doors for students to access industry expertise, networking opportunities, and real-world experiences.
“Together, we bridge the gap between theory and practice, empowering the next generation of innovators to thrive in the dynamic landscape of semiconductor technology. OPP is proud to have ASML as one of our Corporate Sponsors and truly appreciate all of their commitments to working with our students and staff,” Tung said.
