VS Engineering is a collaborative and community-driven civil engineering firm that prioritizes employee development, mentorship, and innovative infrastructure solutions.
Joey Martin's journey in civil engineering has been shaped by invaluable mentorship and hands-on experience, driving his professional growth and commitment to the field. Through his time at VS Engineering, he has discovered a workplace culture rich in support and collaboration, helping him elevate his career to new heights.
In Summer 2022, Joey Martin completed an internship with VS Engineering, Inc. and accepted a full-time offer from them in Fall 2022. Martin completed a 5-session co-op with the Transportation Team at The Troyer Group, Inc. in South Bend, Indiana from Summer 2019 to Summer 2021. He graduated from Purdue University in Spring 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, began working in the Indianapolis office in Summer 2023, and then returned to Purdue in Fall 2023 to complete his master’s degree as part of the School of Civil Engineering’s 4+1 BSCE/MSCE program. He worked part-time with VS in Spring 2024 and returned to VS full-time in June 2024.
Martin worked with the Transportation team at VS Engineering as a design engineer. He used CAD software to design and draft various infrastructure projects, including pavement rehabilitations, road reconstructions, roundabouts, neighborhood sidewalks, lighting layouts, and small structure replacements for INDOT and LPA projects. He also completed quantity calculations and estimates for some of these projects.
Through this experience, Martin gained a deeper understanding of the importance of collaboration and community within civil engineering, where the focus is always on improving public infrastructure and fostering strong professional relationships.
His internship with VS Engineering also broadened his perspective, helping him see the bigger picture.
“My internship with VS engineering gave me the perspective to find the bigger picture. When managing a project, there are often many moving parts that require my attention at different times. I applied this philosophy to my schoolwork, my work/school/extracurricular life balance, and my time as Purdue ASCE Treasurer.”
Recognizing Martin's potential and dedication, VS Engineering provided exceptional support for his educational and professional growth. The company offers flexibility and opportunities tailored to the needs of its students, such as rotations between departments to explore different civil engineering disciplines, the option to work from any of its nine offices to accommodate personal situations, and the ability to work part-time or take a leave of absence to pursue a master’s degree. This level of flexibility is extended to both current and future full-time employees.
“VS engineering offered the opportunity to fund my graduate school education. They also welcomed me to work part time during graduate school,” said Martin. “VS is also a proud supporter of Purdue OPP and Purdue ASCE. [They] played a key role in funding Purdue ASCE’s goal of winning the Student Symposium.”
This generous support reflects the company's broader commitment to employee development and community engagement.
“The people at VS engineering are what make this company shine. Their flexibility and compassion set them apart from other companies,” said Martin. “Their willingness to mentor and foster collaboration is unique to their methodology of project management. I can confidently say that I received more mentorship and overall experience from my internship with VS engineering than I could have anywhere else.”
